Carbon Dioxide - CO2
Health and Safety Information Product Safety Data Sheet REF : HZ / 411/ 951. Identification of Substance
Product name: Carbon Dioxide
Application: Fire fighting medium
2. Composition Information on Ingredients
Composition: Chemical formula CO2
3. Possible Danger
Skin: CO2 is a cryogenic hazard. Discharge of compressed CO2 to air causes cooling. Skin may "stick" to objects frozen by this cooling effect.
Ingestion: Moderately toxic with fatal results.
Inhalation: Asphyxiant gas.
4. First Aid Measures
Skin: On sticking apply warm water to affected area using moderate heat resource / body heat. Seek medical advice.
Eyes: Apply warm clear water and seek urgent medical attention.
Inhalation: Remove from exposed area, keep warm and at rest. If there is distress give oxygen and seek medical advice urgently.
5. Fire Fighting Measures
Fire: CO2 gas is a fire extinguishing agent.
Cylinders affected by fire should be withdrawn from service.
6. Accidental Release Measures
Spillage / leaking: Remove personnel from basement offices / rooms, as the gas will fall. Ventilate thoroughly for several hours. If safe to do so close cylinder valves to prevent further leakage.
7. Handling and Storage
Storage: Store in original compressed gas cylinder, away from heat
Handling: Low temperature gloves and chemical goggles should be worn. Adequate low level ventilation should be provided.
8. Exposure Controls / Personal Protection
General: Observe good working practices in handling compressed gas cylinders. Wear appropriate personal protective equipment.
9. Physical and Chemical Properties
EH40 limits EH40 (LTEL) - 5000 ppm
EH40 (STEL) - 15000 ppm
10. Stability and Reactivity
Boiling point - 78.5 deg C ( sublimes )
Solubility in water 0.145g per 100cm3 at 25 deg C
11. Toxicological Information
Toxicity: Toxic in high concentrations.
12. Transport Information
Transport: Cylinders should be transported in suitable cylinders racks to avoid damage to valve assemblies. Regulatory requirement for the transportation of compressed gas cylinders should be observed.
13. Regulations
None.
14. Other Information
General: Absorptive cartridge type respirators must not be used in a carbon dioxide rich environment.
The product is manufactured to be used in fire fighting extinguishers and is not sold for any other application . If used in training , care should be taken to avoid excessive discharge into the environment. The information provide is based on current knowledge and experience and should be used in accordance with the safety information described above.
If the product is supplied to a third party, it is your duty to make them aware of the information contained in these data sheets.
