New Fire Prevention System for Plant
Construction plant is normally equipped with manually operated fire extinguishers. A new and unique automatic fire suppression system designed specifically for the harsh environment of plant is being introduced into the UK.
Manually operated fire extinguishers work well, however, often the fire may have grown too large to control by the time the operator has become aware of it. Normal automatic systems for plant can be troublesome. Vibration, temperature extremes and chaff materials can interfere with detection and the complexity of these systems make them expensive. The new automatic system can endure the harsh conditions associated with plant.
A polymer composite detection tube is routed through the compartments that need to be protected, thus being right at the source of any fire. The tube bursts when over-heated and releases its extinguishing agent automatically, resulting in the suppression times being faster than could be achieved using manual suppression. The system is simple and requires no electrical power to operate, indeed, some systems are used to isolate the power in the event of fire.
Every second saved results in less damage and down time for the machine. Furthermore, the effects of the fire can be minimised in the event of vandalism when there might not be anybody around to react quickly to the fire.
This new automatic fire protection system is called Firetrace®. It was demonstrated to us at our stand at SED in May this year. It seems to have many advantages but this does not mean that we are in a position to recommend it. We just believe that it is worth investigating further.
