IFEDA Press Release
The recent events in Bournemouth, reporting the removal of life protecting fire extinguishers from a block of flats has been questioned by IFEDA (Independent Fire Engineering & Distribution Association).
Colin Payne National Chairman commented “Having been involved in this industry for more than 35 years I don’t think I’ve witnessed such a short sighted or unconsidered action – which appears to contradict the recommendations of the Regulatory Reform Fire Order’’
He went on to add “Fire Extinguishers are only one part of good fire protection measures, but a very important part. Following a European wide survey it was found that as many as seven out of ten fires which occur were successfully extinguished by portable extinguishers without the fire brigade attending.
This underlines not only the importance of them being present and available within buildings, but also play a vital role they play in preventing destruction of life and property.
Don Munro, IFEDA’s Deputy Chairman added his voice to the debate by saying “All fires start small, even the great fire of London started as a very small flame. If the fire can be extinguished quickly and safely surely it makes sense to have equipment available.
Let’s not forget as a fire grows it becomes a greater and greater threat to life and property. Fires cost the UK millions every year and large fires cause irreparable harm to the environment”.
He added “From what I have read, the problem in Bournemouth arose from somebody’s conclusion that tenants would not know how to use them – surely the sensible answer is not to throw them away but to give proper training and instruction on their use.’’
National Chairman Colin Payne concluded by saying “The decision taken in Bournemouth is not only based upon poor judgement but could prove dangerous. Fire extinguishers which are available in an emergency are a lifesaving aid and can buy time to allow safe exit from a building – very likely before the local fire service arrive on the scene. If they aren’t available you don’t have that option’’
